The federal government currently running at a 1.3 trillion annual deficit.
It is my understanding that the real deficit is a bit higher on the basis that the debt increased more than the deficit. It seems that the government does exclude certain expenditures (considered as investments) and counts the cost of wars to it as well, so the real annual deficit is more like about 1.6 trillion; that is what I read but did not investigate further.
